Dartmoor Drums

Drums

The following are pictures of some of the drums made by Suzi and decorated by Fergus and Suzi. Please remember that each drum is made specially for the person who is going to play it. Working closely with the spirit of the drum and guided by journeys and intuition, each drum is made very particularly for one individual - or as is occasionally the case; one group of people. These pictures are here in order to allow you to see the kind of thing we do, but your drum may not look like these. It will be YOUR drum. If you decide that you would like to order a drum or just talk through the possibilities, please e-mail "Sue at dartmoordrums.co.uk".

Cross culturally and since time immemorial mankind has made and used a drum. The drum is held as being the "heart beat of mother earth", and across the world peoples understand that when we beat a drum the ancestors listen. With the beating of the drum come neurophysiological effects, not only for the drummer but for those hearing the drum. The most obvious of these effects is the entry into a trance state and the possibility of an ensuing Shamanic Journey. The beating of the drum allows the shaman to achieve an altered state of consciousness and to travel on a journey. The drum is in some cultures referred to as "horse" or "rainbow-bridge" between the physical and spiritual worlds.
The shamanic journey is one in which the shaman leaves his body and journeys to a place most clearly referred to as "non ordinary reality" (See Michael Harner's book - The Way of The Shaman). By being able to interact with different worlds the Shaman can then exchange information between the world in which he lives (ordinary reality) and that which he has travelled to (non ordinary reality). Most often this information is used for healing; personal, animal, communal, for the land, for the wounded relationship between us and our planet. The possibilities are limitless..
